Here at The Republic of Tea we like to guide our valued Citizens towards new tea experiences. So, for those of you who crave a morning fix of caffeine to start your day, may we present our Yerba Maté Latte – All Night Samba Herb Tea.
This tea really isn’t a tea per se. Yerba Maté is a smallish evergreen tree, a member of the holly family that thrives in the subtropical rainforests of Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. The Guaraní Indians on the Paraná River in Paraguay first introduced it to Spanish explorers who were looking, to no avail, for precious metals. Noticing that their Indian workers seemed indefatigable, they were soon partaking of this marvelous, delicious herbal drink and discovered an equally valuable commodity – Yerba Maté – “the drink of the gods.” Soon everyone from Argentine gauchos on the Pampean plains to the effete oligarchy of South America was imbibing in the drink. Soon after, it was all the rage in New World Europe.
But adding even more to the enchanting taste of Yerba Maté, is the traditional way in which it is drunk… in a peaceful, thoughtful ritual. It is brewed and then poured into a hallowed-out gourd and sipped through a filter-like straw. Most importantly, the gourd is passed hand-to-hand around a circle of friends and families, constantly being refilled. Sharing this herbal tea, in this communal way, communication becomes sacred.
Today, whether you choose to share our Yerba Maté Latte with friends or sip solo, prefer Full-Leaf Loose or tea bags, you’ll find it silky smooth, full and chocolaty, sweet and floral. We’ve added rooibos, almonds and cocoa to enrich our roasted Brazilian Yerba Maté and flower blossoms to brighten it up even more. Add a touch of steamed milk or milk substitute to make a perfect morning Latte.
