NOVATO, CALIF. (January 22, 2018)

The Republic of Tea, leading purveyor of premium teas and herbs, is thrilled to announce Women of Tea™: Sri Lanka, a program focused on nutrition, hygiene and financial literacy. Working with the international nonprofit, the Ethical Tea Partnership, a local nonprofit, the PALM Foundation, and together with its Citizens (customers), The Republic of Tea is starting to improve the lives of women and their families in Sri Lanka, helping transform teatime into a more positive force for good.

“I’m delighted that the Ethical Tea Partnership is working with The Republic of Tea and the Palm Foundation to help improve the lives of thousands of tea workers and their communities. The program aims to improve people’s diets and livelihoods through training on nutrition, safe drinking water, and hygiene. Together with the financial literacy program the project will help educate these communities and make a difference to the daily lives of the women working in the tea fields of Sri Lanka,” Sarah Roberts, Executive Director, Ethical Tea Partnership.

Women of Tea: Sri Lanka

The Women of Tea: Sri Lanka program will equip tea workers with the knowledge, skills and tools required to support improved nutrition and will strengthen understanding of the importance of nutrition for health and well-being. The goals are to increase the availability of healthy foods, hold nutrition, hygiene and sanitation trainings, and work with families on improving household finances.

“At The Republic of Tea we embody the ancient Chinese philosophy of Ta Shun, when people naturally care about the world and depend on one another for harmony for the whole,” said Kristina Richens, Minister of Commerce at The Republic of Tea. “We recognize our actions create ripples far beyond ourselves, and therefore seek opportunities that help make our world a better place. The Women of Tea: Sri Lanka program was inspired by this idea to honor the lives and well-being of the women who are so central to cultivating our tea. With our partners, we are in a strong position to give back to these Sri Lankan communities and help further enhance the invaluable contribution these women make every day to their families.”
