Self-Care in the New Year: Celebrating Hot Tea Month

Happy New Year! For many Citizens, the beginning of a new year is a time for fresh starts and positive changes. While it is not possible to control the external circumstances around us, we all have the power to influence our internal state of being through intentional acts of self-care.

Self-care describes any activity that we do deliberately in order to benefit our physical, mental, emotional or spiritual wellness. It is an important part of reducing stress and illness, maintaining a positive outlook on life, and building a healthy relationship with ourselves.

This year, we encourage every Citizen to set a New Year’s resolution to incorporate more self-care into their routines. As the month of January is National Hot Tea Month and the 12th is National Hot Tea Day, we are sharing several of our favorite ways to incorporate hot tea into your self-care routines and rituals.

New Year’s Cleanse

The holidays are a time for celebration, which can lead to a disruption of our sleep, eating, exercise and other wellness routines. The start of the new year is a wonderful time to reset and realign your daily behaviors with your long-term health goals. A detox or cleanse does not need to be complex. Staying hydrated, eating nutritious meals and moving your body is all it takes to begin the new year on the right note.

Did you know that January 3rd is the Festival of Sleep Day? This holiday was started to encourage everyone to get extra sleep after the hectic holiday season. Even if you missed this year’s Festival of Sleep Day, you can celebrate the spirit of the holiday throughout the new year by making your nightly rest a priority. Getting more sleep each night is one of the best acts of self-care for your physical, mental and emotional health.

Rather than staring at a screen before bed (which can disrupt your natural sleep-and-wake cycle due to the blue light), engage in an activity that helps you release the stress of the day and shift into sleep mode. This might include taking a warm bath, doing some light stretches, journaling, meditating, reading or sipping a soothing cup of your favorite sleep tea.*
