Tips for Winter Self Care

As the days become colder and the nights grow longer, we say farewell to autumn and welcome the season of winter. For many individuals, this is one of the busiest times of the year: attending holiday parties, visiting relatives, shopping for gifts.

Yet traditionally, winter was a time for humans to slow down and embrace the spirit of rest. Much like the trees going dormant or the animals hibernating in their burrows, our bodies naturally crave more downtime during this season of darkness.

Fighting against this instinct as our modern lifestyles often ask us to do can lead to feelings of stress and burnout, which can take a toll on our immune systems as well.

Support your body, mind and spirit this season with these winter self care ideas.

Nourish Your Immune System

Holiday travel and indoor gatherings can make us especially vulnerable to illnesses during wintertime. The best way to support your body’s natural immunity is through a holistic approach: eating a nutritious diet, drinking plenty of water, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep and reducing stress. Hearty stews and winter salads featuring ingredients such as garlic, ginger, citrus, berries, leafy greens and onions are a good way to naturally nourish your immune system.

Give your immunity an additional boost by sipping a cup of immunity tea each day, such as get protected or get wellness.* Keep a tin of Organic Elderberry Red Tea or Immunity Elderberry Punch Single Sips on hand for days when you are feeling under the weather.*

Get More Sleep

The balance of day and night is shifting, so it is natural that our sleep schedules should change too. As the sun rises later and sets earlier, you may find yourself with less energy and a stronger desire to hit the snooze button. Rather than fighting this instinct with more caffeine, consider embracing the healing benefits of sleep and allowing yourself more rest this season.

Sleeping in may not be an option due to work or school, but you can adjust what time you head to bed. Set yourself up for a good night’s rest with bedtime rituals that support sleep hygiene. End your screen time early, and spend the evening reading and sipping a cup of chamomile tea or bedtime tea, like get some zzz’s. Journaling is a wonderful way to empty your mind before bed, while gentle stretching can relieve tension and help ensure a more restful slumber.

Pamper Your Skin

Harsh winter weather can wreak havoc on your skin, leading to dryness, redness and breakouts. Nourish your skin from the inside out by sipping a cup of Beautifying Botanicals® tea daily.* Berry and botanicalrich Daily Beauty is the ultimate daily sipper, while Clean Beauty is an ideal infusion for gently detoxifying your body after an indulgent holiday party.*

Facial steaming is a tried and true beauty practice that can help to open up the pores, release acne-causing bacteria, increase blood flow and help your other skincare products penetrate more deeply.* Follow one of our easy DIY herbal facial steam recipes to pamper your skin this winter.

Boost Your Mood

While winter invites us to slow down and embrace rest, the decreased sunlight can disrupt your body’s circadian rhythm and trigger feelings of depression in some people. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a condition that should be diagnosed and treated by a physician, but whether you are suffering from SAD or a milder case of the winter blues, there are certain lifestyle changes you can make to naturally support your mood.*

Getting some sunshine and fresh air each day is important, even when it is cold outside. Go for a walk around the neighborhood or spend time soaking up the sun at a local park. While it is not
a substitute for outdoor time, opening up your curtains to let in the natural light can help to regulate your mood and circadian rhythm. Steep a cup of
get happy tea and let the cheerful blend of St. John’s Wort, lemon balm, lemon myrtle and rhodiola lift your spirits.*

The changing of the seasons is always an adjustment period, especially as the arrival of winter brings shorter days, longer nights and colder weather. By making time for simple self care rituals and supporting our bodies with herbal infusions, it can feel easier to lean into the spirit of winter and make the most of this season.
