5 Ways to Improve Your Morning Routine

Your morning routine sets the tone for the entire day. Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.” Each new morning grants us a fresh start and a clean slate, but how we spend that first hour upon waking up matters. 

How does your current morning routine make you feel: peaceful and grounded, confident and energized, sluggish and sleepy, or rushed and stressed? You do not need to be a “morning person” to create a morning routine that sets you up for success each day; every Citizen can transform and improve their morning routine with a few simple adjustments. 

Below, we have outlined a few ways you can elevate your mood, boost your energy levels, and make the most of each and every morning. Commit to trying at least one of these rituals first thing tomorrow, and notice how you feel throughout the day as a result.

1. Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the practice of bringing one’s conscious awareness to the present moment and accepting all thoughts, emotions, and experiences without judgment. By focusing your attention inwards and embracing the present moment, you can achieve a more peaceful and grounded state of consciousness. 

Each morning when you wake up, steep a cup of your favorite energizing tea and participate in a simple five senses mindfulness tea ritual. Engage each of your senses one by one, focusing on what you can see, hear, smell, feel, and taste as you steep and sip your tea. This mindfulness technique only requires a few minutes of your time and can help you start your morning on the right note. 

2. Stretch

When you sleep, you spend all night sedentary—sometimes in a less-than-ideal position, which can leave you feeling stiff and sore. Approaching the day with vim and vigor is difficult when your shoulders are tight or your lower back is aching. 

Stretching is your body’s way of getting your blood flowing and loosening up your joints and muscles. As soon as you wake up, spend a few minutes doing some simple stretches. Focus on the back of your neck, the sides of your torso, your lower back, your shoulders, and your hips. Breathe deeply as you stretch and bring awareness to each part of your body.

3. Do Not Check Your Email Right Away

When you check your email immediately after waking up, you lose your precious morning time to the needs, wants, and demands of other people. Reading an urgent email from your boss or receiving bad news from a coworker is sure to set you on edge before the day even begins.

You have all day to sort through your inbox; dedicate the time before your workday officially begins to yourself instead. Every other component of your morning routine—showering and getting ready, sipping your tea, eating breakfast, exercising—will feel better when you do not have the weight of the day’s to-do list hanging over you.

4. Write Down Three Goals for the Day

Before jumping into the hustle and bustle of your daily routine, spend five minutes writing down three goals you would like to accomplish that day. They could be work-related, such as sending an important email or wrapping up a project, but they could also be personal. For instance, running an errand, cleaning up the kitchen, or checking in with a friend. 

These goals should be realistic and measurable. If the rest of your day spins out of control or does not go according to plan, you will at least feel satisfied knowing that you accomplished your three simple goals. Even achieving one or two of your daily goals is worth celebrating.

5. Sip Tea

Tea is a popular source of caffeine that can serve as a healthful alternative to coffee. Most teas contain less caffeine than a similarly sized cup of coffee.  Teas are also rich in healthful antioxidants and polyphenols. Sip a high caffeine tea to give you the gentle energy boost you want while helping you remain grounded and calm. 

Your morning routine should leave you feeling energized, focused, inspired, and ready to tackle anything that comes your way. Allow each morning to be a sacred time for centering yourself and moving into the day with intention. Which of these rituals are you looking forward to trying out tomorrow?
