Earth Day 2021: Highlighting Our Impact TEAm
April 22, 2021
Happy Earth Day 2021! Each year on April 22nd, individuals, organizations and communities around the globe celebrate Earth Day by showing support for environmental protection.
This year, The Republic of Tea is observing Earth Day by highlighting our internal Impact TEAm. These Ministers meet monthly to discuss topics related to sustainability within the scope of both The Republic of Tea’s operations and their personal lives.
Through this ongoing dialogue, the Impact TEAm helps guide The Republic of Tea and our Ministers towards sustainable, green business practices and lifestyles. Below, learn about some of the environmentally-friendly initiatives spearheaded by our Impact TEAm.
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
Diverting waste from landfills by reducing, reusing and recycling is one of the foundations of environmental stewardship. The Republic of Tea Impact TEAm strives to reduce waste through these measures, among others:
- Compost all food and landscape waste that are accepted
- Eliminate individual, single-use bottles of water for employees and guests
- Donate reusable office items (appliances, furniture, etc.) to charitable organizations
- Reuse envelopes and packaging
- Promote the use of natural lighting and solar energy
- Turning off lighting and appliances in unoccupied rooms, including shutting down power and unplugging appliances at the end of the day
- Conserve water with the installation of ultra-low flow and/or dual flush toilets
We take steps to reduce the use of toxic materials to protect employee health and the environment through measures such as purchasing non-toxic janitorial cleaning products approved for use by the CA Green Business Program. We also purchase rechargeable batteries and appliances, low VOC paints and markers, non-toxic air fresheners and recycled content products when available and feasible.
Environmentally Preferable Purchasing
We purchase and use environmentally preferable materials as often as possible. For instance, we strive to buy printer, kitchen and bathroom paper with a minimum of 30% recycled content. We also select products with the least amount of packaging material — no plastic, polystyrene or aerosol packaging. Additionally, we rely on LED lighting and Energy Star appliances throughout our facility, as well as water efficient toilets, showerheads and faucet aerators.
Conserve Fossil Fuels
We strive to conserve fossil fuels by encouraging our Ministers to use public transportation, carpool or bike to work when feasible. We also strive to build and remodel The Republic of Tea facilities using LEED green building standards.
We educate our Ministers on resource conservation and pollution prevention by facilitating educational sessions on the topics of recycling and composting practices, resource conservation, low-toxic purchasing and more. We only host low or zero-waste events by ensuring that little to no waste is generated during work gatherings and meetings; for instance, requiring caterers to use reusable supplies. We also regularly inform staff of environmental issues through company emails and meetings.
We seek out and use innovations in technology that help accelerate our sustainability and green business goals. Our Impact TEAm and other ministers regularly share new concepts with each other and with leadership. When available, we quickly incorporate and adapt to new concepts in applicable areas, such as energy efficiency and waste reduction.
As we reflect on the 2021 Earth Day theme of “Restore Our Earth,” we are delighted to celebrate the work of our Impact TEAm.
