June 22, 2022
On May 20, 2022, Downton Abbey: A New Era premiered in theaters and delighted fans across
the nation. This highly–anticipated motion picture event follows the Crawley household on a
grand journey from their Yorkshire country estate to the South of France to uncover the mystery
of the Dowager Countess’s newly inherited villa.
In celebration of the cinematic return of the Crawley family, gather your nearest and dearest for
a tea party inspired by the glitz and glam of the South of France.
Setting the Stage
The South of France’s beauty has long drawn the attention of the aristocratic class, along with
artists, writers, movie stars and filmmakers. With its cobalt–blue seas and glamorous clubs, the
French Riviera is all about embracing a lifestyle of luxury and leisure.
Downton Abbey: A New Era captures the charm and sophistication of the South of France with
its magnificent family villa, surrounded by terraced gardens and swaying palms.
Fortunately, inheriting a villa under mysterious circumstances is not a requirement of hosting
your own French Riviera–inspired tea party. With the right attention to detail, you can put
together an event that brings the grandeur of the South of France to your own backyard.
Location and Decor
In Downton Abbey: A New Era, the Crawley family is treated to beautiful, sunny days spent
enjoying the villa’s grounds. If you have access to a private backyard or garden, we recommend
hosting your tea party there. If not, consider local parks or other public outdoor spaces where
you may be able to set up a table and dine al fresco.
Decorate your chosen space with colors and decor inspired by the Côte d’Azur. A clean white
tablecloth will create a feeling of classic luxury, and also evokes the white sand beaches of the
Traditional homes in the South of France range in color from bright coral to sunny yellow to
burnt orange, so you may consider incorporating these colors into your decor. Alternatively, opt
for soft shades of seafoam green, pale purple and powder blue for a color scheme that is
reminiscent of the scenery in Downton Abbey: A New Era.
A French lifestyle–inspired tea party would be incomplete without flowers. An ornate floral
centerpiece is one way to make an impact and set the tone for the day. Alternatively, arrange a few simple sprigs of lavender in glass vases and crates of various shapes and sizes. For an
affordable way to add brightness to your tablescape, fill glass bowls with oranges and lemons.
The South of France is highly regarded for its gastronomic delights. This region is known for its
fresh seafood, sun–ripened produce and expertly baked breads. For your South of France–
inspired tea party, focus on simple foods that deliver plenty of flavor.
Salade Nicoise is a vibrant, summery dish that is named for the city of Nice, where it originated.
This colorful salad traditionally features tuna or anchovies, hard–boiled eggs, olives and
tomatoes over a bed of greens.
Baguettes are another French classic that can yield endless sandwich combinations. Jambon
Beurre (ham and butter, sometimes accompanied by Gruyère cheese) is a staple in cafes
throughout France. You may also create your own recipes using French ingredients such as
sundried tomatoes, goat cheese, brie, figs, fresh herbs, honey and olive oil.
For something sweet, consider serving a fruit salad, macarons, tarts and crepes. Sparkling
water and crisp rosé wine will be welcome refreshments on a warm, sunny afternoon.
Of course, it would not be a tea party without the tea. The Republic of Tea is thrilled to share
