The ancient Chinese philosophy of Ta Shun—or Harmony for the Whole—is alive when people naturally care for one another and the world around them. Since The Republic of Tea was founded in 1992, we have strived to embody Ta Shun for the wellbeing of the planet and the people that live here.
From nourishing the earth to supporting those who help cultivate our tea, goodwill and social responsibility have remained the cornerstones of our brand. Since 1992, we have donated more than $3 million to nonprofits in our local community and across the United States, and have partnered with dozens of change-making organizations.
With Ta Shun as our guiding principle, we are reminded to regularly pause and be mindful of our impact on the whole. Below, we reflect on three of the ways we are proud to support our local and global communities.
1. Women of Tea: Sri Lanka
The island nation of Sri Lanka is known for its rich tradition of women harvesting tea by hand. Through their skills and dedication, these tea workers power their local economies and boost their communities. Working with the Ethical Tea Partnership and the PALM Foundation, we have crafted a program in Sri Lanka centered around elevating thousands of these women and their families.
The goals of the program are to increase the availability of healthy foods, host routine nutrition and hygiene training, and help families improve their household financial literacy. Since the inception of Women of Tea: Sri Lanka, more than 27,000 people living on the 6 gardens we source from, have benefited from the program’s training and workshops.
2. Homeward Bound of Marin
Homeward Bound of Marin is the primary provider of homeless shelters and services in Novato, California—one of our closest neighbors in the Bay Area. Their overarching goal is to end homelessness in Marin County by opening doors to safety, dignity, hope, and independence.
The Republic of Tea is proud to have partnered with Homeward Bound of Marin since 2015, helping to raise $35,000. We have provided volunteers and donations over the years, and have served as the official sponsor of their Fresh Starts Chef Events, which invites celebrity chefs to host a cooking class for Marin County residents once a month.
3. Whole Planet Foundation®
Whole Planet Foundation® is a Whole Foods Market foundation that funds poverty alleviation worldwide, in locations where the company sources products. The nonprofit’s mission is to empower people in developing communities through microcredit—the lending of small amounts of money at low-interest rates to new businesses.
These microloans enable individuals to start or expand their home-based businesses and lift their families out of poverty. The Republic of Tea is proud to be a partner of Whole Planet Foundation®, and to have donated more than $120,000 to generate 1,371 new microloans and aid 7,528 people.
We recognize that our actions create ripples that extend far beyond ourselves. In partnership with these and other nonprofit organizations, we are committed to serving our local and global communities and helping to make the world a better place.
These achievements would not be possible without our Citizens—your support allows us to transform everyday purchases into a force for good. Thank you for helping us uphold the philosophy of Ta Shun.
