Earth Day is the world’s largest environmental movement, and has been celebrated annually on April 22nd since the first Earth Day event in 1970. The Republic of Tea strives to honor the spirit of Earth Day every day of the year through our targeted sustainability programs and eco-friendly initiatives.
Our commitment to protecting and caring for the planet is guided by the ancient Chinese philosophy of Ta Shun, or “Harmony for the Whole.” This principle is at the core of every decision we make, from our tea and herb sourcing to our packaging designs.
In celebration of Earth Day 2019, we are reflecting on some of the steps we have taken to help nourish and give back to the earth, in the hopes of making the world a better place.
Eco-Friendly Tea Bags
Did you know that our signature round tea bags were designed with mother nature in mind? All of our tea bags are unbleached and free of any chemicals or chlorine-containing compounds. They are made of unbleached paper and do not contain any excess wrapping, strings, tags, staples or glue.
Considering that approximately 159 million Americans will sip a cup of tea on any given day, these small packaging details quickly add up! If every tea bag in the nation were designed like ours, the amount of excess waste kept out of landfills would add up to:
- 4.9 tons of staples per day
- 7,528 miles of string per day
- 159,000,000 paper tags per day
Additionally, because our tea bags are completely unbleached and biodegradable, they can be safely repurposed in a number of ways around your home:
- Bury used tea bags in your garden as a nutrient-rich fertilizer
- Pot them with your indoor house plants to absorb excess water and retain moisture
- Soak burnt pans in warm water with used tea bags to help remove the burns
- Place them in the back of your refrigerator to soak up bad odors
Earth Day Teas
Sip sustainably every day of the year with our consciously-sourced Earth Day teas. This carefully-curated list includes best-selling Citizen favorites like Daily Matcha, Republic Chai Black Tea, and Double Dark Chocolate Maté.
The Republic of Tea is proud to partner with cultivators who are as committed to sustainability as we are. All of our Biodynamic® Teas have been sourced from Demeter Certified Biodynamic farms around the world, meaning these suppliers take conscious steps to improve the soil health, water quality and biodiversity on their farms year after year.
Feel good about what you are sipping as you enjoy high quality teas sourced from a multi-generational tea garden in northern India, or a small farm at the base of the Italian Alps. We have also partnered with domestic suppliers like Trout Lake Farm, a leader in the global organic herb industry.
Since our founding in 1992, The Republic of Tea has been committed to sustainability from leaf to cup. Through these and other initiatives, it is our mission to do good for mother earth one cup at a time, every day of the year.
